Not all IID (Ignition Interlock Devices) require that the offender "blow, suck & blow again". Other devices that are available only require you to hum and blow for a 5 second interval for each test. They require a rolling retest after between 9 & 13 minutes and if on an extended drive the 2nd rolling retest will give more time, depending on state regulations.
The hum is required so that artificial air sources cannot be used in place of the human breath. They are very efficient and reliable.
Here in New York they have a unit for those offenders that "have an excuse for everything" which takes their picture during each test to ensure the person taking the tests identity.
I have one in my car and it has become routine everyday driving. I even let my 18 year old daughter use my car anytime with peace of mind, knowing she will never be behind the wheel drunk!
